Utopian Brisbane: Temporary City
This studio called for a conceptual design for Brisbane in 2100. My concept firstly projected a timeline onto brisbane from 2019 until 2100. In this time, I propose that Brisbane will witness a shift in zeitgiest in which the earth and its climate are given priority to the extent of worship. By 2100 I propose humans will reject 21st century capitalist ideologies and accept their role as a small elements in earth’s cyclical existence.
My design was therefore based upon this new civilization.
Through studying ecological principals, a design for a human society to live as an ecosystem with the earth was made. A key principal that was interrogated throughout the process was dynamics. Ecosystems are constantly changing and evolving at different rates. The strongest ecosystems are often the those that change rapidly. These strong ecosystems can easily attack a weaker system that has slower dynamics (for instance, coastal ecosystems are very strong as they are exposed to extremely varied conditions across a small amount of time). Therefore, when locating humans in the new society, their position and infrastructural design had to take into consideration the extremely fast paced dynamism of contemporary society. The design raises humans off the ground on large timber tower structures. This allows for the separation of the slow moving natural environment and the fast moving humans.
A church was designed to cater for this new society. Every element in the new church is designed to be flexible, temporary or biodegradable. as society changes, so too can the church. Its earthen structure will decompose over time, a process that can be watched and celebrated by its occupants. Flexible building techniques such as a dismountable, modular structure, tension-leveled floor plates, and stretched fabric partitions are used to ensure the flexibility of the space. furthermore, the planning of the church aims to highlight the dynamism of earth, with small chapels framing the sunrise and sunset positions throughout the year .
