This will disappear, and that’s OK

The piece ‘This will disappear, and that’s ok’ aims to question the notion of legacy, and the weight it plays in our society. In nature, nothing is truly permanent. Subject to seasonal, yearly, daily cycles, each element faces change, growth and decay. However, today, our lives are driven by permanence. Buildings must last forever, we must make a name for ourselves, we must leave a mark; a legacy. Why? Why is leaving a scar on the earth considered a triumph when it is so innately unnatural? The piece challenges this mindset by simply decomposing. Designed to be physically engaged with, abstract indentations, steps and a comfortable seat height provoke
viewers to touch, sit, stand on the piece which will subsequently begin to crumble and disappear. And that’s ok. It will serve its purpose and leave no mark on the earth. The dirt can be reused endlessly for further pieces or simply returned to the land. Either way, this work will not leave a physical legacy.

This work was presented at Melbourne Design Week 2021 as a part of a group exhibition titled Form:From. Each artist provided a piece of work based around circular systems and natural materials. If you would like to read more about this exhibit, please visit the website below:
